This course will address the relationship between science and music from Antiquity to the present day. It will be of relevance to all Music students including those specialising in performance, compostion or music technology but would also be accessible to students from other program areas. The course will examine the relationship betweeen music and mathematics and the physical sciences. It will study: concepts of symmetry and related ideas including permutations and group theory; probability and randomness, and the relationship between those ideas and musical composition. Scientific and mathematical developments such as non-Euclidean geometry, relativity and quantum mechanics will be considered for their possible relevance to contemporary music. |
