Syllabus:

Building structures, extracting resources, mitigating hazards, and remediating the environment require engineers to interact with the Earth. In these cases, an understanding of Earth materials, their properties, and how they can change or move through time is crucial to developing safe and effective engineering solutions. This course introduces the Earth system to engineers and others, with an emphasis on what the earth is made of (minerals and rocks) how it operates globally (plate tectonics), its significant cycles (water, carbon, atmosphere), and the hazards that can kill us (earthquakes, volcanoes, climate change). The course will assist engineers and others to converse with geoscientists, analyse geoscientific claims, and make better informed decisions on topics that may affect us all in the future, such as groundwater pollution, geohazards and their mitigation, earth resources.
