Syllabus:

This course offers an introduction to definitions of crime and critical examination of the historical origins and contemporary theoretical perspectives on the causes of crime and criminality including: physical and genetic factors; psychological theories; and sociologically based theories of crime. It has a strong emphasis on the legal and political responses to crime, especially the history and effectiveness of ‘law and order’ policy in both the United States of America and Australia, through comparison with the approach to criminal offending and rehabilitation taken in Continental Europe. It will build on issues covered in both LAW 2599 Criminal Law, and LAW 3520 Sentencing and Criminal Justice, but neither of these courses are either pre-requisites or restrictions on LAW 2524 Criminology.
