Students will undertake an extended research project on a topic of their choice related to the field of Gender Studies and Social Analysis. Each student will work under the individual guidance of a supervisor who will assist them with developing and refining the topic, reviewing relevant literature, designing the project, developing skills in relevant research methods, analysing data, and writing up the research project into a thesis of 15,000 words. As an interdisciplinary field, GSSA allows students to pursue a variety of qualitative research methods and approaches according to the expertise of available supervision staff, including study of popular culture, media or film; policy analysis; interviews, participant observation and ethnography; and mixed methods. This allows students to tailor their project to develop skills and knowledge for their future career. Honours in GSSA is especially suitable for students with an interest in socially engaged and relevant research, including social policy and/or social justice. The field of Gender Studies has traditionally been a leader in developing socially concerned and ethical research methodologies, and the Department of GSSA is a leader in teaching qualitative research methods and skills within the University. Students will be assisted to apply for ethics approval where required. The Department provides a strong sense of community and a supportive atmosphere, and Honours students are invited to Department events and gatherings. Prospective students are encouraged to discuss their ideas with the GSSA Honours Coordinator. |
